Why and How to Pronounce the Name of YHWH (Elohim)

New

Even when we are not part of the Sacred Name Movement, nor we endorse it, nothing in Scripture tells us we are to avoid using a name for Elohim. In fact, many ancient copies of the New Testament have come to us without the use of a Hebrew name for Elohim or Yeshua.

But if someone is called Michael, can we call them "Miguel"?. It is the same but in spanish. In almost all cases, people like to be call by their own names, even if it means a little effort in the part of those who do not speak their languages.

So why can we do a little effort and speak the names of Yeshua and YHWH as it was pronounce by those who knew and speak with them?.

1.-IN THE TORAH, ELOHIM TALKS A LOT ABOUT HIS NAME
EXODUS 20: 7 "You shall not take the name of thy Elohim in vain"
LEVITICUS19:12 "Do not swear falsely by my name"
LEVITICUS 24:16 "He who blasphemes the name of YHWH, must be dead"
-These commandments of YHWH are supposed to be valid today, unless, as some say, we do not know the correct pronunciation of the name of Elohim.

-77 Verses in the Torah appear saying: "I am YHWH"
Example: EXODUS 6: 7; 31:13 "I am the YHWH who sanctifies you"
-In the Torah there are three verses that say: "My name is"
JEREMIAH 16:21 "Know that My Name is YHWH"

MALACHI 1:14 "My name is feared among the nations"
-It also says in the Torah:
EXODUS 3:15 "This is my name forever, and it will be remembered from generation to generation" ISAIAH 42: 8 "YHWH is my name"
REVELATION 2:13 "You hold my name"

(In this las verse that church in Revelation (about the year 200 AD) seemed to know His name, even the Almighty congratulates them for doing so.)

-In addition it appears in the Torah:
MALACHI 2: 2 "If you decide not to give glory to my name, I will send a curse upon you"
JOSEL 2:32 "And whosoever shall call upon the name of YHWH shall be saved"
DEUTERONOMY 12: 5 "to put His name there" (in the sanctuary)
PSALM2: 7 "is not cursed them the good name"
ROMANS 2:24 "The name of Elohim is blasphemed among the Gentiles"
-Then, they all knew their name. Why dont we?.

2.-WHY DO WE DO NOT SPEAK HIS NAME?

From the 2nd century began the "Doctrine of the Name", which consisted in not to pronounce the name of YHWH never to avoid taking it in vain. Then, they changed the name of Elohim, constituted by four Hebrew letters, in to "Adonai" (Lord), El Shaddai (Almighty) and even the Hebrew word "Ha shem" (The Name).

Even in the eighth century the Masoretes, writters of the Torah, began to change it, placing name points to indicate vowels. From there comes the name "Jehovah" so popular in our day. So we have no manuscripts of the Brid Hadashah (New Testament) including the sacred name.

Today, all the encyclopedias and textbooks say: "we do not know with certainty the pronunciation of the name of YHWH", stating that "Yahweh," "Jehovah" and other words are acceptable. It is shameful, that all religious leaders, continue to rely on doctrines of men and do not support the commandments of Elohim. Fortunately, the Encyclopedia Judaica says that "the pronunciation of the name YHWH was not lost".

3.-THE PRONUNCIATION OF THE NAME OF YHWH

The assumption that the four letters that make up the name OF Elohim, in Hebrew, are consonants is erroneous. Many scholars claim that the Hebrew name paleplítico aramico and Hebrew had no vowels.

After the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD, there was the dispersion of the Jewish community. One hundred years later, in the second century, most of the Jews did not speak Hebrew. Seeing this, the chief priests of the community, they decided to add symbols to the letters to facilitate their learning.

In several books of "Introduction to the Hebrew" (as Lair Harris) it states that "the four letters: Yod, Hey, Vav and Hey are called vowels. Also in Marks & Rogers and Horowitz says that these four letters were vocals. So all the letters in the name of YHWH could have been consonant-vowels or semi-vowels.

The priest and the Jewish historian of the first century, Josephus, who lived before the change of name of Elohim, described in Exodus 28: 1-43 (Josephus, Volume III, page 273 Thackery book):

New

"The front of the priests was covered by a turban of fine linen, attached by blue ribbon, in which was a golden plate with four vocals (Phonhenta Tessara)".

New

The pronunciation of these four letters were:

Yod = i (as in tea)
Hey = a (as in america)
Vav = u (as in turkey)
Hey = e (as in Edward)

So YHWH is pronounced = "IAUE"

The Greek historian Diodurus (Century I) said: "Among the Jews, Moses refers in its laws to their God as" IAW ".

The first disciples of the apostles as Origen, Epifanos, Irenaeus and Jerome claimed that it was said: "iaw"

So the Jewish Encyclopedia was right: "The true pronunciation of the name YHWH was never lost."

PLEASE REMEMBER: Our salvation is not dependent on our ability to properly pronounce the name of Elohim. Our relationship with YHWH, our obedience to His Laws and our faith in His Messiah Yeshua is what saves us".

Daily Torah - Bible Verses

How do we apply scripture to real life as Messianic Jews - Nazarene?

Our sole purpose in life is to love and glorify Elohim, read the Torah everyday and follow all it's commandments through the Hebrew roots of our faith

We comply with what our Lord Yeshua said in Matthew 28:20 "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" and only then you could be "persuaded in your own mind."

Therefore, "Let no man therefore judge you in food, or in drink, or in respect of an holiday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days" (Col 2:16)

In these pages you will find how you and us as Messianic Jews- Nazarene following the whole Torah applying it to real life and live a successful and meaningful existence as observants of Torah, answering all our questions through it and through Yeshua the Messiah.

Why we use Hebrew names here

Messianic Jews - Nazarene love Elohim and use the original names of the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible in their daily prayers and in their congregations. The words "Jesus" and "Jehova" are not the original names that appear in the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible or the Greek New Testament. They are transliterations that all have use for so many centuries that almost become true. The real names are Yeshua and Elohim. Read More
