Tevilah (Baptism) for Messianic Jews

baptism

Baptism is a Greek word that means to immerse or dip in water. John the Baptist baptized people unto repentance, but always said that somebody else more important than him (Yeshua ) will come after and will be baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matthew 3:11)

Yeshua was baptized to fulfill all righteousness, to signal others that He was the Messiah and showed us how to do as Hebrew Roots Christians:

And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of Elohim . (John 1:31-34).

John was the last prophet of the Old Testament. From now on water baptism was part of the new covenant. Yeshua was anointed for His worldly minister as Messiah.

The law and the prophets were until John since that time the kingdom of Elohim is preached, and every man presseth into it. (Luke 16:16).

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of Elohim came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of Elohim . (Luke 3:2-6)

The spirit of the Lord Elohim is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (Isaiah 61:1).

When Yeshua began His ministry His disciples baptized more persons than John the Baptist. Also with Baptism they received a seal of righteousness, almost like being circumcise

After these things came Yeshua and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. (John 3:22).

When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Yeshua made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Yeshua)himself baptized not, but his disciples,) (John 4:1-2)

And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: (Romans 4:11).

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of Elohim . (Romans 2:29)

In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Mashiach: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of Elohim , who hath raised him from the dead. (Colossians 2:11-12

The Holy Spirit makes us aware of sin and its consecuences, making us transform ourselves inside.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (John 16:8)

People should repent and be baptized to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yeshua Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38).

There is a relationship between baptism, death and the resurrection of Yeshua.

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4).

Also in Hebrews 8:8 Elohim will put His laws in the believers minds, and will write them in their hearts.

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: …; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a Elohim , and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. (Hebrews 8:8-11).

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of Elohim waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward Elohim ,) by the resurrection of Yeshua Christ: : (1 Peter 3:20-21)

WHO SHOULD WE BAPTIZED?: The word is very clear: only he that believe

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. . (Mark 16:16)

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yeshua Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost..(Acts2:38)

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. . (Acts 2:41)

In all these verses and many more through the New Testament there is always a rule: before being baptized the person has to believe. The baptism of children, even when is part of a rich tradition is contrary to the word of Elohim

Daily Torah - Bible Verses

How do we apply scripture to real life as Messianic Jews - Nazarene?

Our sole purpose in life is to love and glorify Elohim, read the Torah everyday and follow all it's commandments through the Hebrew roots of our faith

We comply with what our Lord Yeshua said in Matthew 28:20 "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" and only then you could be "persuaded in your own mind."

Therefore, "Let no man therefore judge you in food, or in drink, or in respect of an holiday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days" (Col 2:16)

In these pages you will find how you and us as Messianic Jews- Nazarene following the whole Torah applying it to real life and live a successful and meaningful existence as observants of Torah, answering all our questions through it and through Yeshua the Messiah.

Why we use Hebrew names here

Messianic Jews - Nazarene love Elohim and use the original names of the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible in their daily prayers and in their congregations. The words "Jesus" and "Jehova" are not the original names that appear in the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible or the Greek New Testament. They are transliterations that all have use for so many centuries that almost become true. The real names are Yeshua and Elohim. Read More
