Is there an obligation to recite the Shema?

Chuch of Christ

The Shema is an affirmation and a declaration of faith in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4). Even Yeshua (Jesus) said that the Shema was the first greatest commandment (mitzvah):

"The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment." (Mark 12:29-30)(KJV)
. There is an obligation to recite the Shema,(Deuteronomy 6:7) in the morning, in the Shabbat and holidays, an at bedtime, and at various other times.

The second line of the Shema: (Barukh shem kvod malkhuto l'olam va-ed) originated in the ancient Temple service, when the people in the Temple respond "Blessed is the name of His Glorious Majesty forever and ever" when the priest recited the first verse of the Shema.

Paul express the Shema in 1 Corinthians 8:6 :
"But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him." (KJV)
Remember:
"By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim, and keep His commandments".(1 John 5:2)
This is the most important commandment as stated by Yeshua:
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart: And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the posts of your house, and on your gates.(Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
So when you recite the Shema you recite:(Transliteration)

Shema Yisrael Adonai eloheinu Adonai ehad
(Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One)
Barukh shem kvod malkhuto l'olam va-ed
(Blessed is the name of His Glorious Majesty forever and ever)

Then you read Deuteronomy 6:4-9.

Daily Torah - Bible Verses

How do we apply scripture to real life as Messianic Jews - Nazarene?

Our sole purpose in life is to love and glorify Elohim, read the Torah everyday and follow all it's commandments through the Hebrew roots of our faith

We comply with what our Lord Yeshua said in Matthew 28:20 "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" and only then you could be "persuaded in your own mind."

Therefore, "Let no man therefore judge you in food, or in drink, or in respect of an holiday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days" (Col 2:16)

In these pages you will find how you and us as Messianic Jews- Nazarene following the whole Torah applying it to real life and live a successful and meaningful existence as observants of Torah, answering all our questions through it and through Yeshua the Messiah.

Why we use Hebrew names here

Messianic Jews - Nazarene love Elohim and use the original names of the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible in their daily prayers and in their congregations. The words "Jesus" and "Jehova" are not the original names that appear in the Tanakh - Hebrew Bible or the Greek New Testament. They are transliterations that all have use for so many centuries that almost become true. The real names are Yeshua and Elohim. Read More
